Update: So the new Apple iPhone 3G S ad was pretty much designed for everyone who read this article. http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/ads/ – Way to inspire an Apple commercial (/end sarcasm).
For reasons unknown I just read an entire article on Wired about how Apple is essentially being lazy with the new-new-new iPhone because Apple is only upgrading some of the hardware (somehow a new faster processor, a camera that actually works with video, and a battery that lasts more than 20-minutes are irrelevant).
The further I read the post the more I wanted some kind of closure. I was hoping that if I actually finished the article there might be something, anything, about the new iPhone but there simply wasn’t. It was all just rehashing of statistics that read more like an advertisement for the “analysts” who pulled said numbers out the air, more so than an article about the iPhone or potential competitors.
It’s lazy writing like this article which is why I had to leave the “Mac web” (as we use to call it back in the day). I just couldn’t tolerate all these PR “analyst” articles anymore. Worse yet, were all the Apple “authors” who think because they now have an iPhone or an iPod that means they can now write about Apple as if they’ve been using Macs since they were 4 years old (which I actually have).
What irks me even more about this post is the fact they don’t even mention the iPhone OS 3.0 and all its new already documented features. The article assumes that because the new iPhone will be mainly software improvements, that means it doesn’t matter. Worse yet, Wired acts like actually mentioning “software” is somehow too complicated for their audience to understand, and that spewing market share numbers and quoting “analysts” is somehow more important.
Ugh how that word makes me cringe, “analysts.” I mean hell, the word even contains the word “anal” in it. Need I say more about these people?
P.S. I predict the Palm Pre will not do well. There will be some hype at first, but it will die as soon as everyone and their Mother gets in line for a new iPhone. Palm hasn’t really ever done anything successful in the companies history. They couldn’t even prevent Microsoft from pretty much taking over the PDA market despite the fact no one actually even uses PDAs other than doctors and pharmacists. Most of which have moved to the iPhone now because all major medical databases came out with iPhone Apps. With that said, no one will ever be able to compete with the iPhone because of the App Store.
Note: I wrote about Apple for 5+ years, I’ve covered Macworlds several times, as well as NAB, and I’ve been using a Mac since before most of you knew what the internet even was.
